How to look taller in 5 easy steps

Updated: Oct 11, 2018

Calling all petite ladies, pocket rockets or ladies who want just want to look taller.

Looking taller is the number one way to look slimmer regardless of your actual height.

The clothing and footwear we wear can work wonders to elongate our legs and, as a result make us long taller and slimmer.

This could be great if you're a petite woman or simply just someone who wants to look taller than you are. When I refer to petite, I’m talking about the height of a person.

A petite woman is one who is 5’4” (163cm) or under.

Here are my top 5 tips

1. Go Monochrome

Monochromatic outfits work really well for the petite woman.

This means an outfit with the same colour from top to toe but in different shades or tones.

They prevent your silhouette from looking like it is broken into 2 and instead make it appear to flow into one.

2. Avoid Ankle Boots

This type of boot is not your friend. Anything that cuts your ankle or calf off will automatically make your legs look shorter. If you want to give it a try, a short skirt would be the best option so you don’t lose too much length from your leg. Or, another way to make ankle boots for you is to match the boot colour AND your tights / skin tone.

3. Select Garments With Vertical Lines

Shorter women can create a slimmer, taller appearance by wearing clothing with vertical lines. They draw the eye up and down rather than side to side.

There are five ways that vertical lines may be created with clothing:

• Vertical stripes in a print

• Seams and vertical zips

• Details that appear vertical, for example wording that reads vertically

• Long dangling necklaces

• A vertical panel of fabric (for example sports luxe stripes on trousers)

When wearing striped clothing, remember that stripes that are too wide may not be proportional with a petite frame (check out the 'getting prints right for your size' blog for more information on print sizes).

4. Show More Leg

Choose cropped trousers, knee length and midi dresses and skirts. This could be culottes, Capri pants or a pleated skirt too.

Outfits that show more of your legs and lower body are flattering on you and make you look taller.

5. Wear High Heels And Go Nude!

It’s the easiest way to add height!

Court shoes and sling-backs are brilliant, but avoid shoes with ankle straps as you will lose leg length. The strap breaks up the desirable vertical line and makes you appear shorter.

If you don’t like wearing the killer stilettos anymore you can actually get away with wearing a lower heel if you opt for a low vamp style as it will elongate your leg.

What's a 'low vamp'?

A type of footwear designed so that the top front comes down to form a ‘v’ shape or shows as much foot as possible.

Nude or light coloured footwear is a winner as it blends through from your leg and ankle, making your height appear taller and legs longer.

Wedges, platforms or 'flatforms' give the illusion of height without the discomfort.

I hope these tips have given you plenty to work with in order to make yourself look as tall and slim as possible.

With Love,
